About Ardh Kumbh Mela 2027
Haridwar is one of the four sacred destinations associated with the Kumbh tradition. According to Hindu mythology, during the Samudra Manthan, a pot containing the nectar of immortality, or Amrit, became the subject of a struggle between the Devas and Asuras. It is believed that drops of Amrit fell at four locations—Haridwar, Prayagraj, Nashik and Ujjain.
Haridwar holds a special spiritual significance because the River Ganga emerges from the Himalayan region and enters the plains here. The city has been an important centre of pilgrimage, spirituality, temples and ashrams for centuries.
The Ardh Kumbh is traditionally held at Haridwar every six years, providing devotees with an opportunity to participate in sacred bathing, prayers, religious ceremonies and spiritual activities.
The 2027 Mela will cover the period from 1 January to 30 April 2027. The Kumbh area is being organised into 32 sectors, with preparations focused on infrastructure, sanitation, security, traffic and crowd management.
Significance of Ardh Kumbh Mela
The Ardh Kumbh is much more than a large religious gathering. It is an important expression of India’s spiritual traditions, culture and faith.
Sacred Ganga Snan
Taking a holy dip in the Ganga is considered one of the most important rituals associated with Kumbh. Devotees believe that bathing during auspicious periods offers spiritual purification and blessings.
Meeting Saints and Sadhus
The Mela provides visitors with an opportunity to witness the traditions of various Akharas and interact with saints, sadhus and spiritual teachers.
Spiritual & Cultural Experience
Along with bathing rituals, visitors can experience religious discourses, satsangs, yoga, meditation, devotional music and cultural programmes.
Ganga Aarti
The evening Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri is one of the most memorable experiences in Haridwar. Devotees gather beside the river as priests perform prayers with lamps accompanied by chants and devotional music.
A Celebration of Indian Heritage
Ardh Kumbh brings together people from different parts of India, making it an extraordinary display of faith, tradition, cultural diversity and spiritual unity.
